Science and higher education are underdeveloped in Sub-Saharan Africa. We think that crucial to long-term success and stability of higher education is to establish a highly skilled and motivated workforce. We believe a well-trained community of scientists doing basic research to help solving the biomedical problems of the region is urgently needed.
Moreover, Sub-Saharan African society is biased towards health science, and most biomedical scientists dedicate a large amount of effort towards teaching medical students, instead of also doing research. The limiting resources and the low societal recognition are the perfect media to culture the scarcity of biomedical scientists. We believe that the human potential present in Sub-Saharan Africa should be supported to flourish and build a better future for their countries and the continent in general.
Drosophila melanogaster has an enormous potential for African biomedical studies. It is a powerful system for modelling human diseases and insect transmitted infections. It also allows for rapid, cheap and thorough screen of drugs, plant extracts and other compounds in the search for disease treatments.
